Questlove’s Summer of Soul (…Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised) won Best Documentary tonight at the 2022 Independent Spirit Awards. It was nominated alongside Ascension, Flee, In the Same Breath, and Procession

The film chronicles the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival, which featured performances from Nina Simone, Stevie Wonder, Sly & the Family Stone, the Staple Singers, and many others. The film’s soundtrack was released earlier this year.

Summer of Soul won the 2021 Sundance Grand Jury Prize upon its premiere. It’s also nominated for a Best Music Film Grammy and Best Documentary Feature at the Oscars this year.
