Ahead of the release of the new Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown, which is out in theaters on December 25th, its star Timothée Chalamet has shared two Dylan covers that appear on the film’s soundtrack: “Like a Rolling Stone” and “The Girl From the North Country.”
The two singles mark the first official releases from the film’s soundtrack following a sneak peak of Chalamet singing “Subterranean Homesick Blues” that arrived in October. The official soundtrack will be out on December 25th, and is comprised of various covers sung by the cast of A Complete Unknown. A tracklist has yet to be revealed; vinyl pre-orders are ongoing and will arrive in January.
Chalamet’s cover of “Like a Rolling Stone” is certainly a faithful rendition of the beloved Dylan tune — although Chalamet’s voice is generally deeper and less reedy than Dylan’s, he’s pretty much nailed the songwriter’s unique cadence and speech patterns.

“Girl From the North Country,” however, is a duet between Chalamet and Monica Barbaro, who plays Joan Baez in the film. A press release notes that Chalamet and Barbaro’s rendition is a cover of the 1963 version of the song (which, funnily enough, does not feature Joan Baez), rather than his more popular 1969 re-recording with Johnny Cash. Listen to both covers below.
It’s been a great week for Mr. Chalamet, as he recently won the praise of Bob Dylan himself. Taking to Twitter — a habit Dylan has leaned into as of late — the legendary artist wrote, “There’s a movie about me opening soon called A Complete Unknown (what a title!). Timothée Chalamet is starring in the lead role. Timmy’s a brilliant actor so I’m sure he’s going to be completely believable as me. Or a younger me. Or some other me.”
Chalamet then responded by quoting the tweet and writing, “Floored. I am so grateful. Thank you Bob.” Meanwhile, Chalamet continued his A Complete Unknown promotional tour by showing up at the University of Minnesota to sing along with their marching band’s rehearsal of “Like a Rolling Stone.” Check out a video of Chalamet, dressed like a mustached Steve from Blue’s Clues, joining the band below.
Although reviews are not out yet for the James Mangold-directed A Complete Unknown, we recently named it as one of the best films of the year for our 2024 Annual Report. See where it landed on our list here.
