Dick Van Dyke has long been a source of joy for many Americans, but when asked about the recent election of Donald Trump, the beloved comedian had an uncharacteristically dark response.

In a video shared by the Daily Mail, Van Dyke — who turns 99 next month — was asked by a member of the paparazzi if he thought the future of America is bright, to which the actor replied, “I hope you’re right!”

Then, the paparazzo questioned if Van Dyke believed Trump is capable of making America great, prompting the Mary Poppins star’s depressing response: “Fortunately, I won’t be around to experience the four years.”

Van Dyke has been a vocal supporter of progressive causes in recent years, endorsing Bernie Sanders in 2016 and 2020, and Kamala Harris ahead of the 2024 election earlier this month.

He’s alone in voicing his disgust over the re-election of Trump, joining figures like Billie Eilish, Jack White, and more who have spoken out against the President-elect.

In other news, Van Dyke recently won a Creative Arts Emmy, tying with Norman Lear as the oldest recipient of the award.
