The film tells the story of a dutiful damsel (Brown) who agrees to marry a handsome prince (Robinson), only to find that the royal family has actually recruited her as a sacrifice to repay an ancient debt. Fresnadillo, the film’s director, talks of flipping traditional fairytale storytelling upside down, working with the actors, and pulling off nearly half-hour-long shots of Brown.
He also touches on how getting Lykke Li to cover Johnny Cash’s “Ring of Fire” elevated the film to a new level. “The lyrics of that song, I think reflect the movie in many ways in some sort of ironic and fun way,” explains Fresnadillo. “I was really happy when Lykke accepted the challenge of making this cover, and she did an amazing job, and I’m so happy to share that with the audience.”
For his part, Robinson talks about his love for playing darker characters, as they challenge him to go in-depth into their motivations. He also talks of working with legendary actors like Robin Wright and what he learned from being on the set of History of the World Pt. II.
